What this actually involves

A file describes an asset; only a visit shows whether it is there, whose hands it is in and whether anyone else is claiming it. We inspect collateral against its papers, down to the plot, plate or serial number. After a loan is paid out we check what it was used for and where the rest went, without treating school fees as fraud. For a group loan we meet the members themselves and ask what they received. For an insurance claim we see the loss, check each supporting paper at the office that issued it, and speak to witnesses who are not the claimant's relatives. Warning signs are reported as signs; the decision stays with you.

What you receive

  • Photographs of the asset and its identifying number, with location and time
  • What was seen against what the file says, point by point
  • Statements from neighbours, group members or witnesses, with each one's role
  • Papers checked at the issuing office, and what that office said
  • A list of warning signs noticed, kept apart from the facts

Who commissions this

  • Commercial banks and microfinance institutions
  • SACCOs and village savings groups lending to members
  • Asset finance and motorcycle loan companies
  • Insurers and loss adjusters verifying a claim
  • Programmes lending through parish or group revolving funds
